Hampshire police asked by PoliceWitness to reconsider their lack of action:
A concerned member of the public was left infuriated after Hampshire police initially shunned his assistance and failed to take steps to safeguard a young child.
The member of PoliceWitness was taken aback when his camera caught what appears to be a taxi driven behind him with a small child’s head and body hanging outside of the passenger window, clearly not restrained in any way.
Policewitness.com reported the matter immediately to Hampshire police.
In a written response from Hampshire police they have stated ‘… it has been decided that no further police action will be taken. Under our current policy Hampshire constabulary will not be investigating incidents of this nature unless there is a significant threat to public safety or if the vehicle is a known repeat offender’.
Chairman of PoliceWitness.com Matt Stockdale said “I am gravely concerned that Hampshire police do not recognise the significant danger to this poor child and that the driver at the time has not even received a warning, my concerns are that the deepening financial cuts are having dire consequences on the decisions being made by the police. I have today written to the new Chief Constable Olivia Pinkney notifying her of this current incident and inviting her to intervene and provide her officers with some additional guidance”.
The person who reported the incident to PoliceWitness said “I am disgusted and I support the actions taken by PoliceWitness in raising this matter particularly as the vehicle in question appears to be a taxi with a professional driver at the wheel".
After being contacted by PoliceWitness Hampshire police decided that the taxi driver in question was going to be dealt with by way of a driver education course. This is a great result that both our member and PoliceWitness are happy with.
